Metabolomix (Advanced Nutrient Status Testing)

I’ve been using the Metabolomix test (formally ‘ONE’ test) for over 10 years. It always comes up with some interesting insights around areas of insufficiency that may have been missed during blood testing. This enables us to specifically target these areas with a nutrition protocol to help optimise the function of the body.


It is essentially an in depth nutritional analysis, giving us valuable information on the intake of nutrients and proteins and the body's ability to utilise those nutrients. Where blood testing of nutrients can tell you if there is an actual deficiency, looking at organic acids tells us whether the body has enough of this particular nutrient to fulfil all of the demands of the cell.


For example, a patient may have sufficient B12 in blood but is not activating that vitamin B12 efficiently, so it is not able to carry out all of the functions.


As well as looking for nutrient needs, it also gives an insight into gut dysbiosis and candida overgrowth; there are markers around exposure to some common toxins and also markers around neurotransmitter production such as adrenaline and dopamine, energy production via the Krebs cycle, and methylation.


It also measures amino acids which tells us ‘does this person have adequate dietary protein; are they digesting and absorbing the protein they are taking in.' Interestingly it also measures some dipeptides in the urine which tell us if that patient is fully digesting their proteins. (maybe due to lack of chewing or stomach acid changes)

What does the Metabolomix+ test measure?

A simple urine sample provides information across several important areas of nutritional and metabolic health, including:

  • Nutrient status – identifies functional requirements for a range of vitamins and minerals, including several B vitamins and nutrients involved in energy production and nervous-system function.

  • Energy production – assesses organic acid markers that can provide insight into pathways involved in cellular and mitochondrial energy metabolism.

  • Amino acid metabolism – provides information about how the body is processing amino acids and utilising protein.

  • Oxidative stress & antioxidant protection – examines markers associated with oxidative balance and the body's antioxidant defence systems.

  • Detoxification pathways – provides information about biochemical pathways involved in the processing and elimination of certain compounds.

  • Methylation-related nutrients – assesses markers that can help identify nutritional requirements for methylation and related metabolic processes.

Looking at these markers together can help build a more detailed picture of an individual's nutritional and metabolic needs than looking at isolated nutrients alone.
